Canada Council for the Arts: Translation & International Translation

Program Summary:

Translation is part of the Arts Across Canada and Abroad program. It funds activities related to the translation of Canadian literary works or dramatic works into French, English, an Indigenous (First Nations, Inuit or Métis) language from the land now known as Canada, American Sign Language (ASL), Quebec Sign Language (LSQ) or any other regional or Indigenous sign language for publication or presentation in Canada. In the case of sign language translation, sign language should be one of the languages of presentation.

For the translation of literary works, the Canada Council for the Arts administers the National Translation Program for Book Publishing (NTPBP) on behalf of the Department of Canadian Heritage and it acknowledges the financial support of the Government of Canada.

Eligible Activities:

Your application can include 1 request to:

  • translate a Canadian-authored literary work into French, English or an Indigenous (First Nations, Inuit or Métis) language, for publication
  • translate and surtitle a Canadian-authored dramatic work into French, English or an Indigenous (First Nations, Inuit or Métis) language, for presentation in Canada
  • translate a Canadian-authored dramatic work into American Sign Language (ASL), Quebec Sign Language (LSQ) or any other regional or Indigenous sign language for presentation in Canada.

Literary publishers can also apply once per year for an annual supplement for reading fees, bilingual editing and promotional expenses. Applicants for sign language translation can apply once per year for an annual supplement for video documentation of the translated work(s).


International Translation is part of the Arts Across Canada and Abroad program. It funds the translation of Canadian literary works or dramatic works for international presentation or publication.

Eligible Activities:

Your application can include 1 request to:

  • translate a Canadian-authored literary work into a foreign language and related promotional activities
  • translate and surtitle a Canadian-authored dramatic work into another language for foreign presentation

Grant Amount:

TRANSLATION: Maximum Funding Amount: Up to $25,000 per title (limit of one translation per application), plus an Annual Supplement for targeted costs (separate application required)

INTERNATIONAL TRANSLATION: Maximum Funding Amount: Up to $20,000 for translation. Up to $2,000 for promotional expenses. You may receive a maximum amount of $44,000 per calendar year.
